The Georgetown Allotment Garden Group is celebrating the launch of the new community gardening plots in Dominion Gardens Park. The allotment gardens have been developed in cooperation with the Town in a designated section of the park, with the Georgetown Allotment Group entering into an agreement with the Town for the management of the space. Initiated by members of the Georgetown Horticultural Society, the allotment gardens allow those who have limited garden space to grow vegetables at home the opportunity to socialize with other garden enthusiasts.
"This has been a tremendous initiative of the Georgetown Allotment Garden Group" said Mayor Bonnette"and they have dedicated many resources into the project, from planning, administration and physically building the gardens. I look forward to seeing the gardens grow over the coming season."
Lil Taggert, President of the Georgetown Horticultural Society noted the following about the development of the allotment gardens: "A year and a half in the planning, and here we are ready to plant in the Georgetown Allotment Garden! This brainchild of the Georgetown Horticultural Society started on a cold January day in 2007 and has developed into a vibrant self-sufficient group. As always, volunteers have made the difference. Our thanks to the Town for their support (especially Warren Harris and Kevin Okimi), the Mayor for his enthusiasm for the project, and the students at Christ the King for their labour."
Construction of the area was undertaken as part of the overall Dominion Gardens Park works, with much of the manual labour provided by the Georgetown Allotment Group members and Christ the King Catholic Secondary School students.
